Conclusion

This chapter provides just a brief review of how to identify the three primary tuna species encountered during tropical tuna purse seining. Not reviewed were details about internal identification mechanisms, such as descriptions of liver shape and swim bladders. There are comprehensive guidebooks available online, which can be used to further enhance one’s identification skills, including the excellent guidebooks produced by David Itano for the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, which formed the basis for the information presented here.
