Purse Seine Guidebook
FAD fishing plays a major role in tuna purse-seine fishing. While purse seining is an efficient fishing method, it also presents several challenges, including bycatch, ghost fishing, and marine pollution, which cannot be overlooked. For FADs to remain a viable tool — considering the ecological and political factors — adaptations must be made. Incorporating the guidelines on FAD data collection, monitoring, and construction provided in this chapter is a necessary first step towards the sustainable management of FADs and the reduction of their associated impacts.
